How many hours have you spent on Pinterest trying to find just the right picture of your dream home and décor? If you’re anything like me, hours. Once you’ve acquired your dream home, the next step is choosing hardwood flooring that truly makes it yours. If it is important to you to have a space that reflects your personal and unique style, shopping for flooring can be a grueling and arduous process involving battling Southern California traffic to get from showroom to showroom, collecting and reviewing samples, and wishing you could have something in between your two favorites. Or maybe your style is so that you want to make a bold statement with a say-something color that is just not naturally occurring. In situations like this, consider custom staining of unfinished hardwood floors.
Most engineered hardwood that you find in showrooms come pre-finished. This means that the color, texture, and finish are applied during the manufacturing process. While there are thousands of beautiful pre-finished hardwood flooring options to choose from, they do limit you in terms of creativity and customization. You may like the color of one sample, but the texture or plank width of another for example. The great thing about creating a custom stain is that you do not have to sacrifice the beauty, elegance, and quality of hardwood floors in order to have a color that you love. Though you can choose any hardwood species that you like such as Maple, Hickory, Red Oak, Walnut, Santos Mahogany, Birch, or Pine as your starting point, here at My Flooring Guy, we have found that our clients typically choose to work with Unfinished White Oak. Once you have chosen a wood species you like, plank width is the next step. We offer plank widths up to twelve inches wide on our Unfinished White Oak. Because the wood is installed unfinished, you have the opportunity to have full control over the color and tone of your stain.
Custom stain colors are created by mixing different ratios of existing factory color stains such as DuraSeal. At My Flooring Guy, we ask that you provide some pictures or samples of the color you are trying to achieve (this is where Pinterest comes in handy), and then we get to work on creating and matching that color. Once we have a few stain options for you, we apply those options as mentioned before, to a test area on the type of hardwood we will be installing in your home. After the stains are dry, you may select the one that you like best or let us know how you want us to modify the color so that its just right. When you are 100% satisfied with your custom stain color, you will have two choices when it comes to how your stain is applied to the hardwood flooring you have chosen. Your first option is to have our installers apply the stain to your unfinished floors after they have been installed in your home and then finish them with the finish level of your choosing from ultra-matte to high-gloss. This process is especially helpful if you are working on a portion of your home and wish to match the stain to an existing floor color. If you prefer, My Flooring Guy can show you samples on a plank of the hardwood flooring you have chosen and then once you choose the stain you like, we will have it as well as the finish of your choice applied in-house and delivered to your home as pre-finished hardwood. Choosing the second option does cut down quite a bit on installation time and is ideal for larger or “whole house” projects.
